Daniel Sturridge will miss England’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova as he undergoes further treatment on a thigh problem at Liverpool, the FA have confirmed.

The 24-year-old picked up the injury in his warm-up ahead of Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday which saw the striker score a fourth-minute winner at Anfield.

Sturridge, who has scored five goals in four games in all competitions this term, was widely expected to feature in Roy Hodgson’s starting line-up at Wembley on Friday.

But the Reds forward has returned to the Merseyside outfit to have treatment on the problem ut will link up with England ahead of their trip to Ukraine early next week.

A FA statement read: “As Roy Hodgson prepares his England team to face Moldova on Friday evening, Daniel Sturridge has returned to Liverpool for further treatment.

“The squad departed St. George’s Park on Thursday afternoon ahead of the World Cup qualifier at Wembley, but the Liverpool forward will return to his club with the intention of joining the England squad again at the weekend and travelling to Ukraine.”
