Aaron Ramsey continued his fine form as he added to Theo Walcott’s opener to give Arsenal a 2-1 win at Marseille in their Champions League group-stage opener.

Elsewhere, Chelsea were stunned by Basel at Stamford Bridge as the Swiss side came from behind to secure a victory which ended Jose Mourinho’s unbeaten record at the ground.

The busy night of European action inevitably prompted an avalanche of activity on Twitter, and here are our favourite updates from the professionals, in chronological order.

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour (‏@RealRomfordPele) lets us know where his money is before the games: “Going Porto Barca and Chelsea treble!”

Republic of Ireland international Jeff Hendrick (‏@JeffHendrick92) is excited: “Love having champions league football back.”

Comedian and Arsenal fan Jack Whitehall ‏(@jackwhitehall) shows his mature side as Arsenal get under way at Marseille: “‘a lot of space for fanni’ how is this commentator not cracking up.”

As does Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker): “Best piece of commentary so far from Alan Smith “He’ll have to do better than that Fanni”.”

Former Chelsea man Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) is thrilled to see the Blues take the lead through Oscar against Basel: “Get in!! Oscar don’t mind a goal in this comp”

While Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) keeps the joke running: “Fanni was wide open for much of that first half. Arsene needs to keep his eye on that.”

Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (‏@asmir1) has his eyes elsewhere: “The 1st half between Napoli and Dortmund has been fantastic…hope it stays the same 2nd half!”

And so is injured Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (‏@Alex_OxChambo) as the Gunners go 2-0 up thanks to Aaron Ramsey: “Boom! 2-0….. Rambo is on fire right about now!! Another very good goal and performance from him! #AFC”

Arsenal legend Parlour (@RealRomfordPele) praises the in-form Welshman: “Well done @aaronramsey on fire my son!”

Meanwhile, news of an upset at Stamford Bridge is filtering through to Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) as the Swiss side take a shock second-half lead: “Bring back Rafa!”

Morgan (‏@piersmorgan) heaps yet more praise on Ramsey: “Let’s be honest Arsenal fans – @aaronramsey was very poor last year and we all said it. He’s brilliant now, and I couldn’t be happier #afc”

The man himself posts the picture above on Instagram (aaronramsey) and writes: “It’s a happy coach journey home!!”
