Jonny Evans admitted Manchester United were “thankful” to secure a much-needed win after the Red Devils edged past Liverpool and into the League Cup fourth round.

After an emphatic 4-1 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday, David Moyes stressed the importance of a positive reaction against their traditional rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

And Mexican striker Javier Hernández scored from a 46th-minute corner to seal victory after an improved Red Devils performance against a full-strength Reds side.

“We certainly enjoyed it,” Evans told Sky Sports. “It was a hard game. Liverpool came and played quite expansive football.

“We’re just thankful we managed to get a goal and hold on.”

He continued: “Liverpool put out quite a strong team with many of the players who played at the weekend.

“I don’t think any of the lads [apart from Smalling, David De Gea and Wayne Rooney] have played much football this season.

“So we were tired towards the end but we managed to dig in and come away with a win.”

United right-back Chris Smalling praised his team-mates for bouncing back from Sunday’s demoralising defeat.

He added: “It was a massive turnaround, especially as there were a few player who hadn’t played many games.

“It was a huge stage for us and the supporters were really behind us.

“There was a lot of doubt and we needed to go out after the weekend and put on a real performance.

“I felt like we did that.”
