Man United 1 Liverpool 0: Moyes heaps praise on match-winner Hernández
Man United 1 Liverpool 0: David Moyes praises Javier Hernández after the striker netted the winner in the third-round tie
David Moyes paid credit to Javier Hernández after the Mexican scored the winner against Liverpool in the League Cup third round.
The Reds Devils, who suffered a 4-1 derby defeat by Manchester City on Sunday, made a bright start before the Reds threatened towards the end of the first half at Old Trafford.
However, Hernández struck seconds after the restart as the 25-year-old capitalised on poor Liverpool marking to poke a finish past Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
The visitors pushed for a leveller and Luis Suárez hit the woodwork before Victor Moses was denied by a superb David De Gea save as United held on to progress to the next phase.
“The movement is great for the goal, that’s what Hernández is all about,” Moyes told Sky Sports.
“He finds space so well. Both games against Liverpool have been tight and have been settled by a goal from a set-piece.”
United defender Jonny Evans added: “I hope the fans enjoyed the game. We certainly did. It was a hard game. They were playing expansive football. I bet it was entertaining to watch. Thankfully we got the goal after half time and we could hold on.
“They put out a strong team, with most of their players playing at the weekend. But this was my first start of the season. We were getting a bit tired at the end.
“We want to win it [the cup]. It was the first trophy I won and it was a great feeling. So it’s a competition we take seriously and we’d be proud to win it.”
