Steve Clarke insisted West Bromwich Albion fully deserved their win against Manchester United after Saido Berahino scored a late winner at Old Trafford.

The Baggies had taken a second-half lead when Morgan Amalfitano lifted his finish over Red Devils goalkeeper David De Gea in the 54th minute.

Wayne Rooney netted his third free-kick of the season to level the game before Berahino completed a wonderful West Brom attack to seal three points.

“We came to get the win, and thankfully, that’s how it turned out,” Clarke told Sky Sports.

“What I would like to say, before anyone goes on about anything else, is please say how good West Brom were and not how poor Manchester United were because we were terrific.

“Everybody did their job. We came here with a positivity. We came to play and didn’t come just try and defend and nick a win.

“My players got a fantastic reception from the United fans at the end, we were clapped off the pitch because we were the better team.”

Clarke also praised the West Brom hierarchy for backing the club’s management in the transfer market this summer after both new signings scored at Old Trafford.

“I think the fact that we made a number of significant signings towards the end of the transfer window has given the whole club a lift.

“We knew that we had lost some fire power in the summer, and credit to the club for backing the judgement of everybody at West Brom and bringing those players in.

“Now you can see that we have a team that can be quite exciting this season.”
