Wayne Rooney remained coy when quizzed about the speculation over his future at Manchester United which dominated the headlines this summer.

The 27-year-old scored a goal either side of the break as strikes from Robin van Persie and Antonio Valencia helped the Red Devils to a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in their Champions League group-stage opener at Old Trafford.

Chelsea had two bids for Rooney rejected during the transfer window after Sir Alex Ferguson claimed the forward had asked to leave the club towards the end of last season.

And when asked if he is happy at United after scoring his 200th goal for the club, Rooney told ITV1: “I’m concentrating on my football, as I’ve done all summer.

“I’ve got my head down and worked hard to get myself fit and ready for the season. I’m delighted with the way I’ve come back, to be back playing and scoring goals.”

Asked directly if he handed in a transfer request, Rooney replied: “Listen, I’ve just told you – I’m concentrating on my football as I’ve done all summer.”

He continued: “The fans have been brilliant. I’ve said all along that the fans here have been fantastic with me. It’s great the reception I get here so hopefully I can repay them with [more] good performances and goals like tonight.”

David Moyes, who marked his first Champions League group game with a win on Tuesday, said he is unsure if Rooney is happy at the club, but praised the striker for his professional attitude.

“I don’t know [if he’s happy],” said Moyes. “I just know that he’s been great in training, he’s worked really hard. He’s fit, he looks lean and I think he showed it in his performance again tonight.

“I said a month or six weeks ago that he’s got a chance to join the real greats here with his goal-scoring record.

“I thought his goals tonight were great and it could have been a hat-trick. He deserved the ovation he got, his performance was terrific.”

Rooney became one of just four players to score 200 goals for Manchester United on Tuesday, and the England international expressed his pride at the achievement.

“It’s something I’m really proud of,” Rooney said. “I’m delighted and pleased to have scored 200 goals for a club like Manchester United is a fantastic honour for me. I hope there’s more to come.”

He added: “I’m delighted to be back playing and scoring. It’s a good result – the first game in the Champions League is always important and thankfully we got the victory.”
