Man United transfers: ‘Leighton Baines deserves new Everton deal’
Man United transfers: Roberto Martinez says Everton plan to reward Red Devils target Leighton Baines with a new contract
Roberto Martínez says Manchester United target Leighton Baines deserves a new Everton deal.
The England international was heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils following the appointment of former Toffees boss David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor this summer.
On deadline day, Baines’ Everton team-mate Marouane Fellaini sealed a £27.5m switch to the reigning Premier League champions but Baines remained at Goodison Park.
The former Wigan Athletic defender’s current contract is set to expire in 2015, and Martínez wants to secure the left-back’s long-term future at the Merseyside outfit.
“Leighton is a massively important player for us and the future of the football club. We want to do anything we can to reward that and he deserves the appreciation and deserves to know how we feel about him,” Sky Sports News quotes Martínez as saying.
“It’s all positive. He’s been an outstanding performer for Everton for years and now clearly he’s at the peak of his career and we’re going to make sure he feels that warmth from the football club and from a contractual point of view exactly the same.”
Baines has netted 16 goals in 202 top-flight appearances for Everton following his £6m move to the Toffees from Wigan Athletic in 2007.
