David Gill says Manchester United are pondering offering Wayne Rooney a new contract following the relentless speculation over the striker’s future.

The 27-year-old’s position at Old Trafford has been a source of uncertainty in recent months after Sir Alex Ferguson claimed that the forward asked to leave the club towards the end of last season.

Chelsea had two bids for the England international turned down by the Red Devils over the summer, and Paris Saint-Germain were also reported to be interested in signing the forward.

And former Manchester United chief executive Gill feels that the Manchester club will be thinking of offering the striker a new deal, with his current contract set to expire in 2015.

“Without doubt, I’m sure they would look at [giving Rooney a new deal],” Gill told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“We had an approach to dealing with players’ contracts at Manchester United that’s stood us in good stead for many years and I’m sure that Ed [Woodward, executive vice-chairman] and David [Moyes] and the owners will continue with that policy.”

Gill also refused to comment on reports saying that United have privately admitted Rooney did not ask to league the club, despite Ferguson’s claims last season.

“I’m not going to comment on that situation,” he added. “I know you’d like me to say what I know. But I’m not going to. I think it’s important to move forward now.”
