Mertesacker: Wenger will get the best out of Ozil at Arsenal

Per Mertesacker has backed Arsene Wenger to get the very best out of Mesut Ozil following the Germany international’s big-money switch to Arsenal.
The 24-year-old playmaker signed a five year deal with the north Londoners on Monday after completing a club-record £42.5m move from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day.
Mertesacker played alongside Ozil during the pair’s time at Werder Bremen – and the defender is fully expecting the Gunners boss to extract the best from the former Real Madrid star.
“I know him quite well,” said Mertesacker after Germany beat Austria 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Munich.
“We spent two years together at Werder Bremen so I think that Arsene Wenger will get the best out of him.”
“I think he will fit in. He suits us and we’re really looking forward to playing with him and to be his team-mate.”
Much was made of Arsenal’s lack of spending in the summer transfer window before Ozil’s arrival.
But the 28-year-old Mertesacker always felt that there was plenty of work going on behind the scenes at the club.
“We were patient all the time on the transfer market. Mr Wenger said always that he was on the market but nothing happened,” he said.
“I could feel that something happened at the end of the transfer window. So I really appreciate that transfer.”
