Parlour: Ozil could attract more Real Madrid stars to Arsenal
Ray Parlour believes Mesut Ozil's transfer to Arsenal could lead to more Real Madrid players being tempted into a move to the club
Ray Parlour believes that Mesut Ozil’s transfer to Arsenal could lead to more Real Madrid players being tempted into a move to Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners signed the 24-year-old playmaker in a club-record £42.5m deal on transfer deadline day following Gareth Bale’s arrival at the Spanish club.
Arsenal were linked with a number of other Real Madrid players during the course of the summer, including Angel Di Maria, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuaín, who eventually sealed a move to Napoli.
And former Arsenal midfielder Parlour believes that Ozil’s arrival may help convince some of Los Blancos‘ stars that the north London club would be a good destination.
“Ozil is a great signing,” Parlour told Sky Sports News. “He’s a world-class player.
“I thought they couldn’t get him and that another target would go begging, but Arsenal fans will be really looking forward to watching him next weekend at Sunderland.
“What I like about the signing as well, is that when you do move clubs, you always talk to your mates at Real Madrid.
“If Ozil settles in and says that Arsene Wenger is brilliant to work under, you might see a few more Real Madrid players come to Arsenal by Ozil’s recommendation.”
Parlour is impressed with the squad Wenger is assembling at Emirates Stadium and feels the Gunners could challenge for the title with a couple more additions in January.
“Arsenal fans will be very excited,” he continued. “No one really thought Wenger would go out and buy a player for more than £30m – he’s never done it before, so that is a positive.
“Giroud’s had a really good start to the season but now [Lukas] Podolski is out for 10 weeks. [Yaya] Sanogo looks a little bit raw still, he’s just come into the Premier League and looks like he might need a year to improve.
“So the only real striker they’ve got after Giroud is [Theo] Walcott.
“If Giroud can stay fit until January, I’m sure Wenger might look at the transfer window and bring in two more players to really push the likes of Manchester United, City and Chelsea.”
