Brendan Rodgers hailed “outstanding” Liverpool after the Reds were comfortable winners at Sunderland.

Daniel Sturridge netted his fifth Premier League goal of the season as he inadvertently knocked a Steven Gerrard corner past Sunderland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

The Reds doubled their lead at half-time when Sturridge produced an excellent run before teeing up Luis Suárez for his first goal since returning from a 10-match ban.

Sunderland rallied after half-time and Emanuele Giaccherini halved the deficit before Sturridge and Suárez combined in the closing moments as the Reds forward added a third.

“It was on the back of a really tough game mid-week [at Manchester United],” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

“It was always going to be a really physically demanding game. So, I thought the work that we put into it was exceptional.

“Obviously to get the three goals and we had chances to score more.

“We were really dangerous on the counter-attack and as a team, we worked really, really hard.”

Rodgers was particularly delighted with Steven Gerrard and Sturridge for their respective roles in Suarez’s first goal.

“It was an unbelievable pass [by Gerrard],” added Rodgers.

“He hit it early and took another touch to tee it up.

“Everyone has seen him play those passes, but with that precision and pace to get there, and Daniel’s touch was wonderful.

“He’s hard to stop one v one and it was great finish by Luis. The last counter-attack one was pretty good.”
