Tottenham 3 Tromso 0: Jermain Defoe says he is thrilled to seize his chance to impress manager Andre Villas-Boas
Jermain Defoe expressed his delight after the Tottenham Hotspur striker seized his chance to impress Andre Villas-Boas with a brace in an emphatic win against Tromso.
The England international, who has fallen behind Roberto Soldado in the pecking order at White Hart Lane, opened the scoring in the 21st minute after the 31-year-old linked up well with new signing Erik Lamela.
Defoe scored his and Tottenham’s second seven minutes later before Denmark international Christian Eriksen curled home an impressive free-kick to seal three points against the Norwegian side with four minutes remaining.
“I think the manager knows, It’s a case of getting out there and working hard for the team. If you can score it’s nice but I just want to work hard for the team. The new lads are brilliant and it was a good win,” Defoe told ITV Sport.
“This is a top club with top players and when you get an opportunity you have to take it.”
Defoe’s second was the former West Ham United striker’s 20th in Uefa competitions for the Lilywhites and moved the England star to within two strikes of Martin Chivers’ European record.
On potentially surpassing the Spurs legend’s tally, Defoe added: “He’s a legend so to be up there with someone like that is great.”
