Nicolás Spolli has revealed he turned down the chance to move to Tottenham this summer in favour of staying at Catania.

The Argentinian defender, who has made 112 appearances for Catania since joining the club in 2009, was linked with a move to White Hart Lane during the transfer window.

However, the 30-year-old insists he never had any intention of quitting the Serie A club for a move to north London.

“At the end of last season I met with the [Catania] president,” said Spolli. “I told him, if he agreed, that I would like to stay in Catania.

“The team knew my desire – it was not news when we received the request from Tottenham.

“In Catania I’m fine, it’s a beautiful city. When you have free time it is amazing to be able to enjoy both Mount Etna and the sea.”
