Tottenham’s Lewis Holtby happy with competition in Spurs squad
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lewis Holtby says he welcomes competition for places at the north London side
Lewis Holtby says he is very happy to be in Tottenham Hotspur’s squad and is relishing competition for places at White Hart Lane.
The Germany international’s future has been called into question after Spurs secured the signings of Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela to bolster their midfield options.
The 22-year-old has scored one goal in 17 appearances in all competitions for Spurs following his controversial €1.75m (£1.5m) switch to the north London side from Schalke 04 in the January transfer window.
But Holtby is pleased with the size of Andre Villas-Boas’ squad and welcomes the intense competition for places at Spurs.
“I am very pleased to be in this squad,” Holtby told the Daily Express.
“You need a big squad if you want to challenge for trophies and be strong in every competition.”
Earlier this summer, Holtby insisted his move to Tottenham has brought him everything he had hoped for.
“Everything I hoped for has come true,” Holtby told Tottenham’s website.
“I had a really enjoyable second half of the season here, although it was more of a meet and greet really because everything happened so quickly, on my second at the club I made my debut at Norwich.
“The time flew by. It really has been an unbelievable spell, the atmosphere at the Lane is fantastic and it’s been a great experience for me.
“I really enjoyed playing with the lads. There is so much quality here and it’s a fight for places because the whole squad is so competitive. It’s so enjoyable playing football with these guys. We had a great season and we’ll improve.”
