Serena Williams continued her stunning form at the US Open as she brushed aside Li Na to set up a rematch of the 2012 final against Victoria Azarenka.

The world No1 needed seven match points before securing a 6-0 6-3 victory after Azarenka had beaten Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 6-4 6-2 earlier on Friday.

Williams has dropped just 16 games en route to the final at Flushing Meadows and was delighted to close out the win on Arthur Ashe Stadium despite some nerves late on.

“It was a good match,” said Williams. “Li Na is such a great player. I got a little nervous but I was able to close it out, finally.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s showdown with Azarenka in New York, the 31-year-old added: “We always have really good matches, it is great to get to another final. She lifts her game when it really counts so I think that’s what makes the difference.”

Meanwhile, Azarenka described the opportunity to come up against Williams in another final as a “dream” following her straight-sets victory over Pennetta.

“It’s amazing opportunity, something that every tennis player dreams of, to be in the final of the US Open and play against the best player in the world,” said Azarenka.

“It’s something that I’m so excited about, and I can’t wait to go out and play.”

Azarenka, 24, added: “When you play against Serena, you have to play your best because she makes me play my best.

“I think we kind of raise each other’s level all the time and take each other to the limit.”
