Mike Phelan believes Wayne Rooney has “sorted his head out” and is now starting to hit top form for Manchester United again.

The 27-year-old’s performance was one of the few positives United could take from their 4-1 derby humiliation at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday as the striker capped an impressive display with a late consolation for David Moyes’ men.

The England international’s future was a source of relentless speculation during the course of the summer after Chelsea had two bids for the forward rejected by the Red Devils.

But former Manchester United assistant Phelan feels that Rooney has put the uncertainty over his future behind him and is now simply focused on performing for his club.

“He’s turned a corner,” Phelan told talkSPORT. “All players have ups and down and bad spells in football. Wayne Rooney has been playing in the top-flight since he was 16 years old, and playing very well.

“He’s had a little bit of a blip, but that might be because he hasn’t been playing regularly and has been put in different positions. It’s only natural that his form suffers a little bit.

“Now he seems to have sorted his head out and you can see that in the performances. He is a stand-out candidate this season for putting in good performances.”

Phelan believes that Rooney has been looking “more content” on the pitch in recent weeks.

“The United supporters were a bit disgruntled and they show that,” he added. “They want their best players to be a part of Manchester United. They don’t want a dissatisfied player, they want them to be a part of moving forward.

“Wayne has sorted those issues out for now and you can see that. He looks more content, he feels appreciated by the Old Trafford supporters and that’s shown in his performances.”
