Marcel Desailly is not convinced that Wayne Rooney was ever close to joining Chelsea following the speculation over the striker’s Manchester United future.

The Blues had two bids for the 27-year-old striker turned down during the course of the summer following Sir Alex Ferguson’s claim towards the end of last season that Rooney had asked to leave Old Trafford.

However, former Chelsea skipper Desailly does not believe that the England international was ever really on the verge of moving to Stamford Bridge.

“I wasn’t really sure he wanted to make a move to Chelsea,” the Daily Star quotes Desailly as saying. “I think it is more business than a desire to move from the club.

“Three years ago he was very clever telling the club that he wants to move to Manchester City. The club have allowed him to get the biggest salary and sign a new contract.

“This time I think they have tried again. It is business, they play the game and try to earn more.”

Rooney scored his first Premier League goal of the season on Saturday as Manchester United ran out 2-0 winners over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
