Steve Clarke admitted his relief at seeing West Bromwich Albion record their first league win of the season against Sunderland.

Stephane Sessegnon opened the scoring in the 20th minute on his Baggies debut with a simple tap-in after Keiren Westwood parried Scott Sinclair’s shot into his path.

Liam Ridgewell then volleyed in the 76th minute, before Morgan Amalfitano’s effort made it 3-0 and condemned the Black Cats to their fourth Premier League defeat of the season.

And after watching his side fail to record a victory in their opening four games, Clarke was a relieved man after the final whistle at The Hawthorns.

“When you have to wait this long for your first win there is some relief,” Clarke told BBC Sport.

“It has been frustrating particularly at home the performances haven’t always been good but today we got the breaks and we ran out deserved winners.

Clarke also reserved special praise for Sessegnon, who joined from Sunderland earlier this month.

“That’s why we bought him here to create chances and score goals,” he said.

“It’s a great start and and an important goal for us. He is a player we have invested a lot in and it can only be good for us in the future.”
