Tottenham moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table thanks to a 2-0 win at Aston Villa on Sunday.

The in-form Andros Townsend put Spurs ahead in the 31st minute at Villa Park when his cross found the back of the net.

And Roberto Soldado wrapped up the win in the 69th minute to move the north Londoners to within three points of early pace-setters Arsenal.

The only Premier League game of the day prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter, and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

As free agent Jody Morris (@morriskid) points to some recent transformations of fortunes: “Confidence is everything in football..only need to look at how everyone is saying Townsend is the new superstar (after 9 loan clubs). Lord Sugar (@Lord_Sugar) wanted to see Jermain Defoe come on earlier: “A bit late, Defoe now coming on. AVB not looking at his twitter feed often enough”

Davies (@TheCurtisDavies) is impressed by a robust Moussa Dembele robust challenge: “Dembele just showed Tonev a brick wall – didn’t know he had that #weights”

Ex-Spurs striker Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) gives us the post-match lowdown: “AVB may be searching for his best formation and easing the new signings in, but Spurs are still only 3 points from the top. A good effort.”
