Arsène Wenger has backed his Arsenal side to show the “spirit and desire” of champions in the coming weeks and months after the Gunners moved back to the top of the table.

Jack Wilshere’s second-half equaliser earned the north London side a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday as Wenger’s men overtook Liverpool on goals scored.

Wenger, who last led Arsenal to top-flight glory back in 2003-04, is hoping his side can continue their impressive run of form after the international break.

“A mentality of being champions is built up through the season and I believe that we continue to focus on the way we want to play,” said Wenger.

“We have desire, we have the spirit but we are only in October, in March and April you can show that you have the mentality of champions.

“But at the moment it’s early and it’s good to continue our run.”

The Frenchman was also pleased to see his side stay top of the table after difficult away games at Swansea and the Baggies.

“I feel it was important not to lose once we were down today and that is the most important thing,” he added. “For the mental comfort it’s good to remain top after two away games.”
