Sam Allardyce has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson told the West Ham United boss that Ravel Morrison could be “a genius” if the youngster focused on his career.

The 20-year-old midfielder beat three Spurs defenders before producing a delicate lob over Hugo Lloris as he scored his second Hammers goal in a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Morrison joined the east London side from reigning Premier League champions Manchester United after a chequered spell forced the Red Devils to sell their young star.

However, Allardyce appears to be getting the best out of a refocused Morrison, and the Hammers boss believes the midfielder is ready to knuckle down and carve out a successful football career.

“He (Morrison) is a brilliant footballer. Top-class ability,” Allardyce is quoted as saying by Daily Mail.

“What did Sir Alex say to me about Ravel? “I hope you can sort him out because if you can he will be a genius.”

“He needed to get away from Manchester and start a new life and it looks like it is paying off.

“The penny has dropped with him in terms of lifestyle, attitude and his time-keeping.”

United defender Ferdinand, who played for West Ham between 1996 and 2000, hailed Morrison’s performance following the east London’s first win at White Hart Lane since 1999.

Ferdinand posted on his Twitter page: “Great to see Ravel Morrison playing well & focused consistently now. That goal wouldn’t make his top 3 goals show reel by the way!”
