Rob Jones believes Liverpool left-back Aly Cissokho is a “good prospect” – and is backing the Frenchman to challenge José Enrique for a first-team spot.

The 26-year-old, who moved to Anfield on season-long loan from Valencia this summer, saw his Reds debut cut short after he suffered an ankle injury in the 10th minute of the League Cup clash against Notts County in August.

Cissokho, who hasn’t featured for the first team since the second-round cup tie, was part of Liverpool’s Under-21 side which thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 on Monday night.

And former Liverpool right-back Jones was impressed with the France international’s performance against Spurs, tipping the Los Che defender to push Enrique for the left wing-back spot in Brendan Rodgers’ side.

“Cissokho had a really good game against Spurs,” Jones told The Sport Review.

“Sometimes it can be hard for a first-teamer coming down to the reserves or Under-21s, but he was magnificent last night.

“He controlled it on the left-hand side, got forward and defended well. It was the first time that I’d really seen him play.

“He’s a good prospect and it will be good for Enrique as well with competition on the left-hand side.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Rodgers claimed Enrique has the potential to eclipse the likes of Ashely Cole and Leighton Baines – and become the best left-back in the Premier League.

“José has been playing with a little bit of an injury, but he’s still been showing his determination and pride for the team,” Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo.

“He has all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

“He’s a threat when he goes forward and defensively he’s very difficult to beat.

“The great thing is that Jose is always working at his game. He appraises himself honestly when we have chats. He’s one who is looking to improve his game and his passing.

“There’s no doubt that on his day he’s one of the best in that position in this country.”
