Rob Jones believes Brendan Rodgers has got his tactics spot on in recent weeks as Liverpool’s 3-5-2 system delivered results against Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

The Reds boss has switched to the unorthodox tactic in an attempt to accommodate his plethora of in-form centre-halves and give Liverpool more flexibility in attacking areas.

And the tactical switch has paid dividends after the Reds secured successive 3-1 wins against the Black Cats and Palace, hoisting them into second place in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool defender Jones, who played in a 3-5-2 system under Roy Evans in mid-1990s, reckons the depth of options in the current Reds squad means Rodgers can deviate between different set-ups.

“It’s [3-5-2] worked well,” Jones told The Sport Review.

“I think what he has noticed is that he’s got attacking full-backs – like [Jose] Enrique – and he’s got some good centre-halves there.

“So the system seems to work with the players that he’s got.”

Jones added: “Knowing Brendan, he’ll play that system – but any time he feels he’s playing a team which requires him to revert to a back four, he’s also got the players to do that.

“Liverpool have got a good squad at the moment – amd Glen Johnson is coming back now and Coutinho should be back in a few weeks.

“Once we get a fully fit squad, who knows where the season can go! We won’t get carried away – but it’s a good squad.”
