Stan Collymore believes Mesut Ozil’s club-record £42.5m switch to Arsenal this summer was a “cracking deal” for the Gunners.

The Germany international signed a five-and-a-half year deal at the Premier League leaders after the north London agreed to fork out a record fee to secure the playmaker’s services from Real Madrid.

Ozil has already scored one goal and made four assists in six appearances for the Gunners, and Collymore hailed Arsenal’s big-money move for the talented midfielder.

“In today’s market you would have to say his £42.5m fee was a cracking deal, and that is the only reason I think Wenger has bought him,” Collymore told the Mirror.

“Wenger has always said he will sign a player of genuine quality if he feels the price is right – and that is why I believe Ozil has now arrived at the Emirates.

“I have spoken to plenty of Gunners followers over the past few weeks and some seem to be under the impression that Wenger only signed Mesut Ozil because of the pressure they put him under. Sorry, but I’m not having that.”
