Wayne Routledge admitted Swansea City were forced to grind out a “gritty win” after edging past St Gallen at Liberty Stadium.

The Swans, who were looking to build on an impressive 3-0 win at Valencia in their Europa League group-stage opener, were handed a scare when St Gallen’s Goran Karanovic missed a first-half penalty.

Swansea improved in the second half and Routledge netted his third strike of the season in the 52nd minute to keep the Welsh side top of Group A.

“No game is going to be easy and they battled hard, and in the end it was a gritty win,” Routledge told ITV4.

“(The performance) shows that we have massive character but in the dressing room we know that we can knuckle down and play if we have to, but people know what we are about now.”

Leon Britton conceded Swansea were sloppy in the early stages of the European match before improving after the interval.

“The first 25 mins it was a bit sloppy and with the penalty – maybe we could have had a penalty ourselves.

“It wasn’t a great performance. It as pretty gritty but it’s two from two.”

Meanwhile, Wigan Athletic secured a 3-1 win at NK Maribor to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
