Mauricio Pochettino has spoken of his displeasure at Southampton’s loss at The Emirates – but has backed goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

The Poland international made a calamitous error which allowed in-form Olivier Giroud to rob possession from the shot stopper and score a simple opener in the 21st minute.

The Gunners had to wait until the 85th minute before cementing maximum points after France international Giroud got the better of the Pole from the penalty spot.

The Saints could drop to sixth if Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all win on Sunday, and Pochettino admitted he was unhappy with the manner of the defeat.

“I’m clearly unhappy with the result and the way we lost as well, but this is football – these things happen,” Pochettino told BBC Sport.

“We competed well, though, in Arsenal’s ground, the league leaders. We competed until the last minute and that’s the positive. We tried our best.

“It’s not really necessary to analyse what happened, we all saw it on the pitch. We want to support our keeper in spite of this mistake – these things can happen in football and we need to work hard to make sure they don’t happen again.”
