Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger wanted Marseille’s Florian Thauvin
Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger admits he was tracking Florian Thauvin before the striker agreed a deal to join Marseille
Arsene Wenger has admitted he had been tracking Florian Thauvin ahead of the midfielder’s summer move to Marseille.
The 20-year-old playmaker has emerged as one of France’s brightest prospects after scoring 10 goals and making one assist in 32 Ligue 2 appearances last season.
However the Premier League leaders were pipped to the France Under-21 international’s signature after he agreed a four-year deal with their Champions League opponents in the summer.
Despite the disappointment of failing to lure the midfielder to The Emirates, Arsenal boss Wenger tipped Thauvin to have a promising future.
“It was a surprise transfer for me. We were following him and were interested in him before he joined Lille,” Wenger said.
“He is one of the big prospects of French football. He will go higher. He’s only 20.
“His progress now will not depend on his talent, but on his mentality. Only the future will tell us.”
