Arsenal transfers: Per Mertesacker delighted by contract extension talks
Arsenal transfers: Per Mertesacker believes the Gunners are rewarding his good form by opening talks over a contract extension
Per Mertesacker has revealed he is in talks with Arsenal over a new contract.
The Germany international has been one of the north London side’s standout performers in the first quarter of the season after forging a solid partnership with Laurent Koscielny.
Mertesacker, who endured a tough first campaign in the Premier League, has scored four goals in 84 appearances for the Gunners following his £8m move from Werder Bremen in August 2011.
The towering centre-half’s current deal is set to run until 2015, but the 29-year-old is pleased to be opening up talks over a potential contract extension at The Emirates.
“I am very delighted here. The first year was tough for me, a very tough challenge, but the club and the manager always trusted me in a special way. I think it is a little reward that we are talking [about a new contract], because I still have one-and-a-half years left,” the London Evening Standard quotes Mertesacker as saying.
“There is no rush but it seems that some people are delighted with my performances at the moment. I am pleased with the situation.”
