Manchester United's Wayne Rooney says Mesut Özil is a very clever player ahead of England's clash against Germany at Wembley
Wayne Rooney has hailed Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil as a “clever player” ahead of England’s clash against Germany at Wembley.
The 25-year-old playmaker has scored three goals and made five assists in 12 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners following a club-record £42.5m move to north London on deadline day.
Ozil drew a blank in a 1-0 loss to the defending Premier League champions earlier this month, but 27-year-old Rooney has still been impressed by the Arsenal midfielder’s performances since arriving in England.
“He’s a clever player,” Rooney said of Ozil, who is injured for the friendly.
“He doesn’t stick to one position, he moves along the line. He moves in behind positions in midfield, he can score and assist goals. He’s a fantastic player.”
Despite Ozil’s absence, Rooney warned England that Germany have plenty of other attacking threats that can spoil the hosts’ night at Wembley.
“There are so many good players,” Rooney added.
“Thomas Muller works hard and scores goals – big goals as well. The biggest thing they’ve got is as a team. They all play together and know their jobs, That is why they are so difficult to play against.”
