Arsenal striker Theo Walcott is still slightly ahead of Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend in the race for an England spot, according to former Gunners midfielder Ray Parlour.

Townsend, 22, scored in England’s 4-1 victory over Montenegro before impressing in a 2-0 win against Poland which booked the Three Lions’ place in next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Gunners forward Walcott has been sidelined for the past two months due to a stomach injury but the 24-year-old is expected to return to the Arsenal first-team after the current international break.

Despite Townsend’s eye-catching performances for club and country, former Arsenal star Parlour feels Walcott is still ahead of the Spurs winger in the England pecking order.

“It’s very healthy to have competition for places as sometimes you can get a bit complacent as players if you know you are going to play,” Parlour told Sky Sports.

“But suddenly after a couple of really good performances Andros Townsend is right up there.

“If anything I’d put Theo just slightly ahead of him at the moment, but Andros has down himself a real favour by playing in those two games and playing really well.”
