Arsene Wenger hails Arsenal’s new-found defensive stability

Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal’s defensive stability is one of the key factors behind the Gunners’ impressive start to the season.
The north Londoners moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League table thanks to a battling 2-0 win over high-flying Southampton on Saturday, with Olivier Giroud netting a goal either side of half-time at Emirates Stadium.
The victory came on the back of Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat by Manchester United in their last league outing before the international break, and the Gunners boss praised his side for maintaining their focus against the Saints.
“We have improved our defensive stability,” said Wenger. “After an international break you have always two challenges, one is to get the team to focus again as a team because we have been spread all over the world, and you have very little time to get the focus point right.
“The second is physical, because they all come back in different levels of fatigue, some have not trained a lot. The first point we got right, the team were highly focused, we suffered a bit physically but overall the concentration was there.”
Wenger added: “I am convinced that after a break like that, the character is tested. Can you win when you have to in a season like that, straight away again after a big defeat [to Manchester United]? That was really at stake for us.”
