Gus Poyet insisted that his Sunderland side deserved a victory after claiming only their second away point of the season at Aston Villa.

Paul Lambert’s men could have taken the lead in the first half when Christian Benteke missed from close range, before the visitors were denied a penalty for a Ciaran Clark handball.

Sunderland then had a great opportunity to take the lead through Emanuele Giaccherini, before Fabio Borini hit the bar with a header.

But Poyet, whose side are 19th in the table and five points from safety, was eager to take the positives from the clash at Villa Park.

“It is a good point for different reasons,” said Poyet. “We performed for 90 minutes, we made it difficult for Villa and created chances. We are keeping on growing.

“We had a miss from two yards and hit the crossbar. Sometimes you have to understand when you are at the bottom that things don’t go for you.

“I think we deserve it [a win]. The players were believing. We didn’t get the three points but it is a step in the right direction. The idea is to maintain this level and I am sure we are going to be all right.”
