Bayer Leverkusen 0 Man United 5: Player ratings as David Moyes' men book their last-16 spot in style with an impressive victory

Man United

Bayer Leverkusen

Bernd Leno Looked nervous early on and maybe should’ve done better with Valencia’s goal but was left in no man’s land for United’s second goal. Was well beaten by Rooney’s pass to Smalling. 5/10

Giulio Donati Pushed forward too much and allowed Rooney and Kagawa to operate behind him on the counter. 5

Emre Can Struggled with Valencia throughout the night and didn’t look comfortable at all. Playing out of position and it was obvious. 3

Stefan Reinartz An off-night for the midfielder, who struggled to contain Giggs and offered little going forward. Struck the post with a header. 5

Omer Toprak Almost got on the score sheet but the ball evaded him at the far post. Had to help clear up after Can. 4

Emir Spahic Rested at the weekend for this encounter, Spahic still looked off the pace and struggled with Nani. Looked better in United’s box than his own. Scored an own goal. 4

Lars Bender The German international had a decent game. He won the ball back well in midfield and looked to get the ball forward. 6

Simon Rolfes Not really in the game tonight and offered little support to Kiessling. 5

Stefan Kiessling The top scorer in the Bundesliga last season rarely got a sniff tonight. The target man held up the ball well to bring others into play. 5

Gonzalo Castro Got into a shooting position but was flagged offside before spurring his shot. Had a frustrating game. 5

Heung-Min Son Leverkusen’s number seven looked to get forward whenever possible and started the game well. United restricted him to long shots but he looked dangerous. 6

Eren Derdiyok Struggled to make an impact in a game where he was expected to make a difference. 5

Jens Hegeler Failed to make an impact during his short time on the pitch. 5

Dominik Kohr Picked up a booking. Not much else to say. 5

Manchester United

David De Gea Had very little to do but made one smart save low to his left. 6

Chris Smalling A quiet game and was rarely tested, especially with Bayer playing so narrow. Scored a simple goal. 7

Patrice Evra Kept Castro quiet throughout and looked threatening on the overlap. 6

Ryan Giggs The best midfielder on the pitch. Was spraying passes across the pitch with ease. Played like he was half his age. 8

Rio Ferdinand The veteran centre-back looked a little out if place but his experience proved vital whilst United were on the back foot. 6

Johnny Evans Saved United from going one down in the first half with a last-ditch challenge on Kießling. A great performance rounded off with a simple goal. 8

Antonio Valencia United’s main form of attack was Valencia’s speed. He caused Leverkusen problems with his flicks and crosses before latching on to Rooney’s cross to score the opener. 8

Phil Jones Put in some good crosses but wasn’t challenged much defensively. 6

Wayne Rooney (man of the match) A fantastic cross evaded the entire defence before it found Valencia at the back post who slotted the ball home. His drilled cross also set up Spahic’s own goal. A neat lob across goal completed a trio of assists. 9

Shinji Kagawa Starting in his preferred role behind the striker, deserved a goal for his efforts. 7

Nani Faded in and out of the game but when he got the ball in a forward position he always looked likely to create something. Scored the fifth with a well executed shot with the outside of his foot. 7

Anderson Should’ve made it 5-0 but spurred his shot after linking up well with Nani. 6

Ashley Young Attacked Can when he had a chance. 6

Alexander Büttner Like Evra, who he replaced, Buttner had very little to do. 6
