Arsene Wenger heaped praise on Aaron Ramsey after the midfielder scored twice to help Arsenal beat Cardiff and move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Ramsey headed home Mesut Ozil’s cross in the 29th minute to give the Gunners the lead against his former club.

Fraizer Campbell forced a brilliant save from Wojciech Szczesny early in the second half, before Ozil set up substitute Mathieu Flamini, who rifled home to make it 2-0 four minutes from time.

And midfielder Ramsey then added gloss to the scoreline when he drilled home in stoppage time.

“It shows you how much Aaron Ramsey has improved,” said Wenger, whose side have won 10 of their opening 13 Premier League games.

“We came here two or three years ago and he had a nightmare here in a cup game, which shows you how much improved he is as a player.

“You are always torn between being happy to score and happy you can win the game, but out of respect for the club where he was educated he didn’t celebrate.”

Wenger was delighted by his side’s defensive display as they kept their third straight clean sheet in all competitions.

“It was a very solid defensive performance that was needed against Cardiff,” added the Frenchman.

“When you play first [before your rivals] you can only do your job and see what happens after. But if you do your job well you can relax.”
