Cardiff City

David Marshall No chance with the United’s goals but the Scot made some good saves when he was given a sporting chance. 7/10

Kevin Theophile-Catherine Consistent performer. Coped well with Januzaj, forcing the winger inside more than he would have liked. 7

Andrew Taylor The centre-half thwarted much of the danger down Cardiff’s left. 6

Steven Caulker The Cardiff centre-half continues to impress. Positionally very good and strong in the air in both boxes. 7

Ben Turner Gave the ball away for the opener with a sloppy pass but formed a decent partnership with Caulker against a busy United forward line. 6

Gary Medel Reliable and effective in his traditional holding role and is the glue in a very promising Cardiff midfield. Routine error to not track Evra from the corner, though. 6

Don Cowie Provided plenty of energy and a high work-rate which defines Cardiff’s approach. 7

Jordon Mutch Terrific pinpoint pass to Campbell for the striker’s goal. Good energy throughout, and alongside Whittingham and Medel, gives real balance to that midfield. 7

Frazier Campbell Lovely finish for the goal. In a game where chances were likely to be scarce for the former United man, taking those that did come was crucial. Will score many more this year if he stays fit. 8

Peter Odemwingie Quieter than he or his manager would have liked but enough movement into deeper areas to help free up more space for Campbell. 6

Peter Whittingham Always a pleasure to watch. The threat from set-pieces is obvious but great passing ability and often dictates Cardiff’s tempo. 7

Substitutes

Craig Noone Plenty of running when Cardiff needed an injection. 6

Bo-Kyung Kim Only contribution a vital one. Decent finish. 7

Andreas Cornelius N/A

Manchester United

David de Gea Couldn’t do much with either goal and wasn’t troubled much beyond that. 6

Chris Smalling Another outing at right-back and one of his better ones. Strong in the air but will struggle against better opposition. 6

Patrice Evra Wouldn’t have believed the space that he was given for the goal but offered Kim the same luxury in injury time. 6

Rio Ferdinand Strong showing against an often direct and aerial approach from Cardiff. 7

Jonny Evans Struggled to cope with Campbell’s movement but looked more assured when the ball was fired in off the ground. 6

Tom Cleverley Wasn’t helped that he and Fellaini were outnumbered in midfield and Cardiff’s direct approach seemed to pass Cleverley by at times. Neat on the ball as ever, but little penetration going forward. 6

Antonio Valencia Useful when in a supporting role defensively but his off-colour season continues. Virtually anonymous going forward. 5

Marouane Fellaini Still finding his feet in the side’s set-up and his languid style won’t quieten his critics. Needs a big performance to get his season going but struggled against a far more dynamic Cardiff central three. 5

Javier Hernandez Rooney’s free role often left the Mexican adrift on his own up front and struggled to make any impact as a result. Surprising he lasted until the 74th minute. 5

Wayne Rooney (Man of the match) Superb. Debate on whether he should have been sent off or not aside, his performance was typical Rooney. Popped up all over the pitch and quite clearly a cut above his peers. 9

Adnan Januzaj Energetic and willing but lacking any final ball. His width allowed his side to develop more options going forward but rarely did these end up coming through the young winger 5

Substitutes

Danny Welbeck Not much to work with as United on the back-foot for much of the last 20 minutes. Squandered the only half chance he was given. 5

Ryan Giggs Late drama ruined his return to Cardiff. Hardly in the game when he was brought on. 5
