Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho: ‘Phenomenal’ Ashley Cole has role to play
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho hails Ashley Cole's "phenomenal" attitude - and reveals he will play a part in festive period
Jose Mourinho has hailed Ashley Cole’s “phenomenal attitude” – and confirmed that the Chelsea left-back will return to the starting line-up for the busy festive period.
The 32-year-old hasn’t started a Blues game since their surprise 2-0 loss to Newcastle United at the start of November after suffering a rib injury.
Mourinho has heaped praise on Spanish full-back Cesar Azpilicueta as the former Marseille man continues to impress in an orthodox left-back role.
But the Blues boss insisted Cole would have an important role to play ahead of games against Southampton, Sunderland and Stoke City this week.
“He will [play]. There are lots of matches now. Now it’s time for the squad [to be used]. Now is time for everybody to feel like they have a chance [to play],” said Mourinho.
“We play Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday [against Southampton, Sunderland and Stoke]. Everyone will have a chance and Cole will play for sure and have a chance to show that he is fine.”
Mourinho continued: “His attitude is phenomenal. He has the same attitude today that he had when he trained with me for the first time [in 2006].
“Ashley is Ashley. He went through a difficult period, yes, and Cezar Azpilicueta is playing fantastic. But Ashley’s attitude is an example.”
