Arsenal moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League table thanks to a 2-0 win over Southampton at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Saints goalkeeper Artur Boruc gifted Olivier Giroud the opener in the 22nd minute at Emirates Stadium after he was caught dwelling on a back-pass for too long and allowed the striker to tap home.

And Giroud put the game beyond the visitors when he fired home a penalty in the 86th minute after Jose Fonte was penalised for pulling Per Mertesacker’s shirt.

The game prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Golfer and Arsenal fan Ian Poulter ‏(@IanJamesPoulter) is stunned as Boruc’s error puts the Gunners ahead: “I wonder if Boruc is thinking…….. oh Boruc..Hahahaha what a cock up.”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) is quick to chime in after Giroud makes it 1-0: “Fortunately, you don’t need an extra yard of speed when Boruc’s brain suddenly tells him he’s Lionel Messi. #Afc #Giroud”

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann (‏@DietmarHamann) gets involved: “I didn’t know John Cleese was in goal for Southampton #Boruc”

And so does former Wales international Robbie Savage ‏(@RobbieSavage8): “Oh no oh no oh no !! What an earth was boruc doing , hahahahahahaha shocking 1-0”

Ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville (‏@GNev2) is stunned: “What was he doing Boruc???”

Poulter ‏(@IanJamesPoulter) is delighted as the Gunners are awarded a late penalty: “Yes that will be that then 2-0”

Morgan (@piersmorgan) reacts to the resulting goal in typical fashion: “BOOOOOOM! 2-0. Great penalty @_OlivierGiroud_ #Afc”

Lord Sugar (‏@Lord_Sugar) is quick to respond to one of Morgan’s post-match tweets: “@piersmorgan: Top. Of. The. League. #Afc”……I say Piersy are you ready to apologise about all rubbish that you was throwing at Wenger”

To which Morgan (@piersmorgan) replies: “@Lord_Sugar #MindTheGap”

Arsenal youngster Nico Yennaris (@Nico_Yennaris) is thrilled with the three points: “Great result from the boys today! Had fun being a photographer for the game with @Stuart_PhotoAFC & @priceyd101 too! #AFC”

And so is Gunners defender Kieran Gibbs (‏@KieranGibbs): “Big 3 points and clean sheet against a good side. #AFC #Arsenal”

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere (@jackwilshere) is putting his feet up after the victory: “Good win today against a very good team. SFC will finish in the top 6 this season! You heard it here first,Now watching Madrid! Decent Team!”
