Arsenal moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League table thanks to a 2-0 win over Southampton at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Saints goalkeeper Artur Boruc gifted Olivier Giroud the opener in the 22nd minute at Emirates Stadium after he was caught dwelling on a back-pass for too long and allowed the striker to tap home.

And Giroud put the game beyond the visitors when he fired home a penalty in the 86th minute after Jose Fonte was penalised for pulling Per Mertesacker’s shirt.

The game prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Golfer and Arsenal fan Ian Poulter ‏(@IanJamesPoulter) is stunned as Boruc’s error puts the Gunners ahead: “I wonder if Boruc is thinking…….. oh Boruc..Hahahaha what a cock up.”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) is quick to chime in after Giroud makes it 1-0: “Fortunately, you don’t need an extra yard of speed when Boruc’s brain suddenly tells him he’s Lionel Messi. #Afc #Giroud”

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann (‏@DietmarHamann) gets involved: “I didn’t know John Cleese was in goal for Southampton #Boruc”

And so does former Wales international Robbie Savage ‏(@RobbieSavage8): “Oh no oh no oh no !! What an earth was boruc doing , hahahahahahaha shocking 1-0”

Morgan (@piersmorgan) reacts to the resulting goal in typical fashion: “BOOOOOOM! 2-0. Great penalty @_OlivierGiroud_ #Afc”
