Tommy Smith expects Liverpool’s “incredible” Luis Suarez to play a decisive role in next weekend’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

The Uruguay international has scored eight goals in six Premier League outings since returning from a 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea in April.

The 26-year-old, who is the English top-flight’s joint top goal-scorer alongside Reds team-mate Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero, scored twice in a 2-2 stalemate with Everton at Goodison last season.

And former Reds captain Smith tipped Suarez to steal the headlines in the derby next Saturday.

“Fair play to Luis Suarez. He has only played half the games but is the league’s joint top scorer,” Smith wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“What an incredible talent he is. And for all that has gone on, he has managed to put it all behind him and come back as good, if not better, than ever.

“There are real signs that he is learning and maturing too. I hope it is permanent – can you imagine how many he might have scored without the bans and controversies?

“He’ll be crucial for us in next Saturday’s derby, of course.

“We all recall how last season he scored and swallow-dived in front of David Moyes, who had tried to wind him up.

“But if Luis ends up in the headlines again next weekend, I suspect it might not be for anything controversial.”
