Man City 4 Viktoria Plzen 2: James Milner challenges the Citizens to top Group D after an unconvincing win at The Etihad on Wednesday
James Milner has challenged Manchester City to top Group D after the Citizens edged to an unconvincing win against Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday.
Sergio Aguero, who scored twice in the 6-0 rout of Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 20th minute before Tomas Horava levelled with a long-range strike.
The Citizens surged back into the lead through Samir Nasri midway through the second half but City goalkeeper Joe Hart, who was restored to the starting line-up, conceded his second goal of the night after a sweeping Plzen move.
But Pellegrini’s men wrapped up three points thanks to late goals from substitute Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko, and the City midfielder Milner wants the Citizens to try to beat holders Bayern Munich in their final group game.
“I think it would help to come top in the group, it will be tough out there but hopefully we can go out there and give Bayern Munich a game and see what happens,” Milner told Sky Sports.
On the performance of Citizens goalkeeper Hart, Milner added: “Joe Hart has just kept going, worked hard and made good saves when he gets the chance. He is a great professional.”
France international Nasri admitted City were made to work hard for three points by Group D’s fourth-placed side.
“It was a hard game, but the most important thing was to finish our home games in the group with a win.”
