Manchester City

Joe Hart Could do nothing about either goal. Made a magnificent save from Kolar’s blistering shot and another with his feet from Rajtoral. His kicking was also particularly good. 7/10

Micah Richards Looked dangerous getting forward with his unconventional ‘under-lapping’ runs coming inside the winger towards the box. Not the best performance defensively but far less of a culprit than either centre-half. 6

Martin Demichelis Slow and unconvincing. He has yet to really prove himself to be a capable deputy to Vincent Kompany and this was another uneasy display. Booked when he brought down Horava on the edge of the box. 5

Joleon Lescott Looked a little short of fitness and struggled to keep up somewhat as Plzen counter-attacked at pace. 5

Aleksandar Kolarov Superb block to deny Rajtaral’s goal-bound effort but did not get forward as much as he often does. 6

Javi García Struggled to really make an impression in the game. Every attack that City built went through Fernandinho instead of him. 5

Fernandinho Supreme defensive display of strength and positioning. Also used the ball well on most of the occasions that he had it. Substituted. 7

James Milner Industrious performance as he put himself about but lacked quality at times. Booked for a nasty tackle having already commited several fouls. 6

Samir Nasri (man of the match) Looked positive and full of trickery. Crashed a wonderful long-range effort against the cross bar and volleyed wide soon after. Took his goal well, steering the ball home with his weaker left foot. Substituted. 8

Edin Dzeko A really quiet night for the Bosnian who will have done very little to displace Aguero and Negredo as the first-choice strike partnership. His touch was often heavy and his finishing was extremely hesitant. Did manage to eventually get a goal in stoppage time with a well-directed header. 6

Sergio Agüero Had the ball in the back of the net as he looked a threat early on but was adjudged to have been too physical on his way to goal. Won and scored the penalty which put City in front. Substituted at half time with an injury. 7

Jesus Navas Immediately brought an extra dimension to City’s play with his pace. Inviting cross to set up Nasri for the second. 7

Yaya Toure Involved in the build-up to Nasri’s goal within seconds of coming on. Booked for a late tackle that puts him out of the game against Bayern Munich but ensures he is available for the knockout games. 6

Alvaro Negredo Dzeko’s despondency was clear that, after all of his frustrations, Negredo managed to score so soon after coming on. In truth he could not have missed but his positioning was good nonetheless. 7

Viktoria Plzen

Matus Kozácik Wonderful save to push Fernandinho’s header over the crossbar and not at fault for any of the goals. 6

Frantisek Rajtoral A real danger to City as he provided real pace and width getting forward from right-back. Unfortunate to give away the penalty, his arms were outstretched but he knew little about it. 8

Marian Cisovsky Dealt with Dzeko well but when City managed to produce moments of real class he looked somewhat out of his depth. 5

Vaclav Prochazka Managed to get in behind the City defence but steered his first time effort harmlessly over. Also defensively weak. 5

Roman Hubnik A very solid and robust display. Good forward run to tee up Horava for Plzen’s first goal shortly after a lengthy spell off getting treatment. 7

Milan Petrzela Worked extremely hard but one shot that went wide was his only real contribution to the game. Substituted. 5

Tomas Horava Thumping finish from the edge of the box to get Plzen level and was only denied a clear chance for a second when his driving run was ended by a Demichelis foul. 7

Pavel Horváth Played a lovely ball into the box that led to the second equaliser. Set-piece delivery was wayward. 6

Michal Duris Struggled at times and missed a great chance when the ball was pulled back to him by Kolar. Substituted. 5

Daniel Kolár Came in and out of the game but displayed a good range of passing across the 90 minutes. Brilliant 35-yard shot moments after the hosts’ second goal that produced a great save from Hart. Substituted. 6

Stanislav Tecl Had a fairly quiet game until he popped up in the Blues’ box to calmly roll in a low finish into the far corner. 6

Substitutes

Jan Kovarik Ineffectual when introduced. 5
