Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney heaps praise on "fantastic" Shinji Kagawa after the midfielder's display at Leverkusen
Wayne Rooney has hailed “fantastic” Shinji Kagawa after the midfielder’s starring performance in Manchester United’s 5-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night.
The Japan international was handed a rare start by manager David Moyes and thrived in a No10 role behind Rooney, providing an integral link between the midfield and attack.
And the 28-year-old striker, who made four assists in the five-goal rout at the BayArena, was impressed by Kagawa’s impact against Sami Hyypia’s high-flying Leverkusen outfit.
“I think it’s a team game and it’s always great when you can help your team-mates score goals,” Rooney told United’s website. “Thankfully, they have done that tonight.
“Shinji is a fantastic footballer so it’s great for us. He hasn’t played much football but came in tonight and played superbly. It’s great to have players fighting for the positions.”
Rooney also praised 40-year-old Ryan Giggs after the veteran produced an influential midfield performance in Germany.
“Ryan has done it for years and I’ve run out of things to say about him,” added Rooney.
“During the game, actually, the centre-half for Bayer was asking how he is still playing at that age! It’s great to see him with his composure on the ball. I certainly won’t be playing at that age, that’s for sure!”
