Man United’s Rooney expecting Van Persie partnership to flourish
Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney says he is enjoying his strike partner Robin van Persie this season
Wayne Rooney has warned Manchester United’s Premier League rivals that his strike partnership with Robin van Persie is only going to get stronger this season.
The Red Devils duo combined as former Arsenal captain Van Persie netted a 27th-minute winner against Arsene Wenger’s Premier League leaders at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Rooney and Van Persie have scored 12 of United’s 18 goals in their 11 top-flight games this season, and the 27-year-old forward believes the pair are excelling together.
Asked if he feels he is forging a strong partnership with Van Persie, Rooney told United Review: “Yeah, of course. I think that’s the main thing for any forward, you’re trying to work together to score and create goals.
“It’s great for the team if myself and Robin can create chances for each other and score goals that are helping us to win matches.
“It’s really enjoyable for us as players to play that way. We’re both creative players and I think that’s why we’re working well. We’ve started the season in good form, but we’re always looking to be better on the pitch.
“We’re both good enough players to adapt to any situation really, whether you’re playing high up or dropping deeper to get on the ball. But you have to remember that we’ve also got Chicharito [Javier Hernandez], who has been in good scoring form recently, and Danny Welbeck, who is also a big asset to the team. They also want to play and score goals for the team.”
Van Persie scored 23 Premier League goals as the Netherlands striker helped United win the top-flight crown last season.
