Per Mertesacker netted the winner as Germany condemned England to their second friendly defeat at Wembley in five days.

The Arsenal defender headed home Toni Kroos’s cross six minutes before half-time as the Three Lions stuttered to back-to-back home losses for the first time in 36 years.

Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning second-half hat-trick handed Portugal a 3-2 win over Sweden to book his country’s place at next summer’s World Cup.

A busy night of international action inevitably prompted a flurry of activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates, in chronological order.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5) feels England are unlucky to fall behind: “After Joe Hart’s save earlier he never deserved that goal at all…come on England”

Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara (‏@chris_kammy) looks for the positives: “Germany score at Wembley , we are 1-0 down & were looking the better side before they scored. Ah well its only a friendly -:)”

Ex-Sunderland man Michael Gray ‏(@mickygray33) questions England’s defending after they concede: “Felt for joe hart there… Pulled off a great save… Where was the defending for the goal… I’m sure the press will blame him anyway..!!!”

As ex-England front-man Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) makes a valid point about the opposition: “Don’t worry, this German team will look nothing like this come the World Cup.”

Reading striker Jason Roberts (‏@JasonRoberts30) is upbeat despite the final score: “I thought that was a really good workout for England,..lots of positives, bar the result of course…”

Former Bolton captain Kevin Davies ‏(@Kevin__Davies) asks his followers for some reaction: “What do we make of the England performances?!? Lets be thankful we have a World Cup to look forward to I say!!!”
