Wayne Rooney insists that Manchester United’s top target this season must be defending their Premier League title.

The Red Devils currently find themselves in fifth place in the table after a stuttering start to David Moyes’ reign at Old Trafford.

United closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to five points after a 1-0 win over Arsene Wenger’s men at Old Trafford on Sunday.

And Rooney, 28, says it is vital that United start to climb the table as they look to land their 21st top-flight title.

“I’ve always said throughout my career that the most important trophy in any season in the Premier League,” Rooney told United’s website.

“It’s your domestic league and it decides who is the best team over the course of a season. That’s the one that it is vital we try to win.”

Rooney has scored seven goals and made six assists so far, including setting up Robin van Persie for United’s winner against Arsenal on Sunday.
