Arsene Wenger has warned his Arsenal side that they will face a stern test of their title credentials against Southampton on Saturday.

The Gunners head into the clash two points clear at the top of the Premier League table, with the high-flying Saints just three points behind the leaders.

And Wenger believes that Southampton’s impressive start to the new campaign has underlined the unpredictable nature of this season’s Premier League.

“They have conceded only five goals since the start of the season and after 11 games that’s remarkable,” said Wenger. “It shows you [that it will be] a big challenge for us to open up their defence.

“The team has played together now for a long time. They have the best defence in the league – and that is the best basis from which to be consistent.

“[Southampton and Arsenal’s positions] show as well how unpredictable the Premier League is this season and it means as well that the two teams have been consistent.

“The biggest quality that will be needed to win this Premier League will be consistency in results.”

Wenger also paid tribute to Mauricio Pochettino for the impact the Argentine manager has had at St Mary’s since taking over at the club back in January.

“I think he has done extremely well, because he came in in a period when it was questioned. He’s done a great job in a very efficient way and you have to give him great credit for that.”
