Sam Allardyce hailed West Ham United’s “big win” after the Hammers put three goals past their fellow struggling London rivals Fulham.

After a goalless first half, midfielder Mo Diame broke the deadlock at Upton Park in the 47th minute with a deflected shot which went past Netherlands international Maarten Stekelenburg.

Carlton Cole, who sealed a return to the Hammers last month, added a second to give the east London side some breathing space before Joe Cole sealed three points with two minutes remaining.

“It was a big win for us,” Allardyce told BBC Sport.

“The pressure is always on when you don’t get results and slide towards the bottom three.

“When you come up against your nearest rivals in the table, with both sides on 10 points, it is a six-pointer so putting three points between us and
Fulham is obviously a very healthy situation for us.

Allardyce added: “I always believed if we created chances we would score goals and we did that today.”
