Andre Villas-Boas has heaped praise on Étienne Capoue for his defensive performance after being deployed at centre-half for Tottenham’s 2-1 win at Sunderland on Saturday.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who moved to Spurs from Toulouse in the summer, was forced to play in the heart of Spurs’ rearguard due to a number of injury problems for the north Londoners.

And Villas-Boas was gushing with praise for the France international after his display at the Stadium of Light as he made his fourth Premier League start of the season.

“It was a great performance by Etienne,” said Villas-Boas. “We had to shuffle the back four completely.

“Etienne deserves credit because he was looking for a performance like that and he gave it over the 90 minutes.

“We spoke to him during the week, we all want him to succeed here and great performances like that mean he’s back on track. Everyone is extremely happy for him.”
