Arsenal 0 Chelsea 0: Player ratings as the Gunners are held to a goalless draw by a battling Blues side

By Max Bentley

Wojciech Szczesny Produced two good saves to deny Torres and Lampard en route to keeping his seventh league clean sheet of the season. 6/10

Bacary Sagna He has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers this season and he produced another tireless display down the right, getting crosses into the box and proving solid defensively. 7

Per Mertesacker Another good performance from the tall German defender who stuck tight to Torres and demonstrated his excellent reading of the game. 7

Thomas Vermaelen Retained the captain’s armband on his return to the side and made a number of key headers and interceptions to keep the Chelsea attack at bay. 7

Kieran Gibbs He was caught too high up the field on more than one occasion but was fortunate that Willian did not take advantage. Did not offer enough offensively. 5

Mikel Arteta Offered good protection to the Arsenal back four and helped keep things tidy in the midfield. 7

Tomas Rosicky It was a tenacious and energetic display from the 33-year-old who battled hard to help Arsenal retain possession in the midfield. 7

Aaron Ramsey The Welshman has been one of the revelations of the season but this was his worst performance to date as he sloppily gave away possession on a number of occasions. 3

Mesut Ozil The £42m playmaker has endured a slump in form recently and his creative abilities were once again restricted by Chelsea’s effective pressing game. 5

Theo Walcott Failed to build on his impressive display against Manchester City as he rarely got beyond Azpilicueta down the right although he did have a decent penalty appeal turned down. 5

Olivier Giroud He once again failed to turn up in a big game as he looked lethargic up front and was easily marshalled by Terry and Cahill. Missed Arsenal’s best chance late on. 4

Petr Cech He was a mere spectator for the majority of the game although he stayed alert and produced a fine save to deny Giroud late on. 6

Branislav Ivanovic The Serbian produced a solid defensive display and dealt well with Ozil when the German drifted out to the left-hand side. 7

John Terry Proved insurmountable in the air and showed an excellent reading of the play to keep Giroud quiet. 7

Gary Cahill Made a brilliant sliding challenge to prevent Giroud from converting Sagna’s cross in the first half and produced an assured defensive display to effectively contain the France striker. 8

Cesar Azpilicueta Continues to impress in an unfamiliar left-back position and it seems that Ashley Cole will have to settle for a spot on the bench for the foreseeable future. Made a crucial clearance off the line late on. 8

John Obi Mikel Escaped punishment when Mike Dean failed to spot his studs-up challenge on Arteta but effectively broke up play in front of the Chelsea back four. 7

Frank Lampard (Man of the match) Struck the bar with a fantastic volley in the first half and was Chelsea’s star performer in the midfield, breaking up play excellently and getting forward to assist the attack. 9

Ramires A typical tenacious and energetic display from Ramires who pressed the Arsenal midfield all over the pitch and restricted their playmaking abilities. 7

Willian The Brazilian summer signing has struggled to settle into the English game and despite getting into a number of promising attacking positions, he spurned a number of presentable opportunities. 4

Eden Hazard He has been Chelsea’s best performer in recent weeks and he produced another lively and creative display at the Emirates to test the Arsenal defence. 7

Fernando Torres Looked lively and tried to get in behind the Arsenal centre-backs but ultimately did not have the quality to make a difference. 5

Andre Schurrle Offered Chelsea fresh legs down the left wing but struggled to make the desired impact off the bench. 6

Oscar The playmaker made a late cameo off the bench but was determined to assist Chelsea’s defensive effort and rarely got into a dangerous attacking position. 6

David Luiz Came on with three minutes to play and help consolidate Chelsea’s clean sheet. 6
