Olivier Giroud insists that Arsenal are not in serious need of a new striker in the January transfer window.

The France international netted his eighth Premier League goal of the season to hand Arsenal a 1-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday and move the Gunners back to the top of the Premier League table.

Much has been made of Arsene Wenger’s apparent lack of options up front, but Giroud insists the likes of Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott are more than capable of leading the line.

If the coach wants me to rest, he can do it without buying a new striker

“We have the players to play up front,” Giroud told Canal+ before Arsenal’s win at Newcastle.

“Lukas is having a good come-back. Theo can play as a striker. We have the quality and the quantity.

“If the coach wants me to rest, he can do it without buying a new striker. I would rather not see a new striker come in.

“I always have to recover, to get massages, to eat well, to sleep well. This is how we live. I am lucky to not be injury-prone. I have a body that tolerates the accumulation of games.”

And speaking after Sunday’s win at Newcastle, Giroud added: “It’s nice to score, it’s been a few games so it’s important to come back.

“It was a tough game against my fellow Frenchies and it was important to get the win.”
