Per Mertesacker admits that Arsenal will need to make the “right additions” in the January transfer window if they are to continue their Premier League title bid.

The Gunners, who have not won the top-flight crown since 2004, moved back to the top of the table thanks to a 3-1 win over West Ham United on Boxing Day.

You need to get the right additions with players who come back from injury

Per Mertesacker

Lukas Podolski’s cameo appearance inspired Arsenal to victory at Upton Park as the Germany international set up Theo Walcott’s second goal and fired home a third himself on his return to action from a hamstring injury.

And defender Mertesacker feels that the north Londoners need to strengthen their squad in the mid-season transfer window after losing Aaron Ramsey to a thigh injury.

“We need the right additions,” Mertesacker told Arsenal Player. “We said that a lot in the summer then Mesut Ozil came.

“But at this time, in a very special period that only happens in England, you need to get the right additions with players who come back from injury.

“We lost Aaron Ramsey [against West Ham] so a good player is maybe out for two or three weeks so we need the right additions now. We have a good squad and that’s going to be vital in the next couple of weeks.”
